Billy, a brilliant teenager from an impoverished town in western Massachusetts, has a chance to escape his dysfunctional surroundings and attend the prestigious Deerfield Academy, with the aid of his teacher...who wants to seduce him. “Scarcity,” states playwright Lucy Thurber, “is about the pull between the loyalty you feel for your family and the loyalty you feel toward your own personal dreams.”

“Thurber writes with both humor and pathos about this household, whose family values of love and loyalty are constantly put to the test in an environment of poverty, ignorance and casual violence...” - Variety
